Medical Heat Sealer

Medical Heat Sealer

A medical heat sealer must produce validated, traceable seals on sterilisation pouches to meet ISO 11607 and EN 868 standards. Whether you run a dental practice sealing instrument pouches or a hospital CSSD processing thousands of packs per shift, the sealer you choose determines whether your packaging passes audit.

Why medical sealing requires validatable equipment

Every dental practice, hospital sterile services department, and pharmaceutical facility in the UK must seal sterilisation pouches to a standard that can be audited. ISO 11607 sets the requirements for packaging of terminally sterilised medical devices, and EN 868 defines the materials and seal integrity needed to maintain sterility until the point of use.

A standard impulse sealer cannot meet these requirements. Medical heat sealers differ in three ways: they produce a multi-line seal wide enough to prevent peelback failure, they monitor seal parameters in real time (temperature, pressure, speed), and they generate traceable records of every seal cycle. If your CQC or HTM 01-05 audit asks for proof that your instrument pouches were sealed correctly, a validatable sealer provides that evidence.

PackSealer stocks the Audion Medical and Hulme Martin Medical ranges. Both are designed for dental practices, hospital CSSD departments, and pharmaceutical packaging environments where seal integrity is a regulatory requirement, not a preference.

Choosing between impulse and band sealers for medical use

For dental practices sealing fewer than 200 pouches per day, a medical-grade impulse sealer handles the workload. The Audion Magneta 421 MG produces a consistent 3mm seal on standard sterilisation pouches and is compact enough for a decontamination room bench. The Hulme Martin HM 2950 adds 316 stainless steel construction for environments where the sealer must withstand regular wipe-down with clinical disinfectants.

Hospital CSSD departments and pharmaceutical packaging lines processing hundreds of pouches per shift need a continuous medical band sealer. The Audion AD666 MPCV Contimed seals at 10 metres per minute with a 15mm multi-line seal, prints batch codes and operator IDs directly onto the pouch, and monitors every seal parameter for validation. It handles paper-polypropylene sterilisation pouches, Tyvek pouches, and thin aluminium foil laminates up to 100 micron.

If your facility also needs to vacuum-seal medical devices before sterilisation, we stock the Audion Validatable Magvac range with full ISO 11607-2 calibration capability. Businesses sealing non-medical products such as food packaging should look at our standard impulse sealer range instead.

Comparing medical heat sealers we stock

The three sealers below cover the range from single-practitioner dental surgeries through to hospital-scale sterile services. All are listed under our Medical and Validatable Sealers category and are in UK stock.

MachineSeal widthSeal typePrice (ex VAT)Best for
Audion Magneta 421 MG3mmImpulse, magnetic closure£945.00Dental practices, small clinical labs
Hulme Martin HM 2950 SS3mmImpulse, 316 stainless steel£945.00Hospitals, cleanrooms, food-grade labs
Audion AD666 MPCV Contimed15mm multi-lineContinuous band, validatable£3,655.00CSSD departments, pharma packaging lines

For dental practices, the Magneta 421 MG or HM 2950 will handle daily pouch sealing at a fraction of the cost of a band sealer. The AD666 MPCV justifies its price when your daily volume exceeds 500 pouches or when your quality system requires full parameter logging and batch coding on every seal.

Validation, calibration, and compliance

ISO 11607-2 requires that the sealing process is validated. This means the critical parameters (seal temperature, seal force, and seal time or speed) must be measured with traceable instruments and documented. PackSealer provides manufacturer calibration services for validatable sealers in our range. New machines can be calibrated before dispatch, and machines already in use can be returned for re-calibration.

HTM 01-05 (the UK Department of Health guidance for decontamination in dental practices) specifies that pouch sealers used in dental surgeries must produce a seal that maintains sterility through storage and transport. The guidance recommends a minimum 6mm seal width for sterilisation pouches, though many practices use 3mm impulse sealers successfully where the pouch material and seal integrity are confirmed through routine testing.

If your facility requires on-site calibration or annual service contracts, call us on 0121 704 0294 to arrange a schedule. We can also test your specific pouch materials against our sealers to confirm compatibility before purchase.

Common questions

What is ISO 11607 and why does it matter for medical sealing?

ISO 11607 is the international standard for packaging of terminally sterilised medical devices. It requires that the sealing process is validated, meaning seal temperature, pressure, and time are monitored and documented. Any dental practice or hospital packaging sterile instruments must use equipment capable of meeting this standard to pass CQC and HTM 01-05 audits.

What seal width do I need for sterilisation pouches?

HTM 01-01 recommends a minimum 6mm seal width for sterilisation pouches. The Audion AD666 MPCV produces a 15mm multi-line seal that exceeds this requirement. Many dental practices use 3mm impulse sealers successfully where routine seal integrity testing confirms adequate performance for their specific pouch materials.

Can I use a standard heat sealer for dental pouches?

A standard impulse sealer will physically seal the pouch, but it cannot provide the parameter monitoring, batch coding, or validation documentation that medical regulations require. For compliant dental practice decontamination, use a sealer listed under our Medical and Validatable range. The Magneta 421 MG is the most cost-effective option for single-practitioner surgeries.

How often should a medical heat sealer be calibrated?

Most quality systems require annual calibration of validatable sealers. PackSealer provides manufacturer calibration services where critical process parameters are measured with traceable instruments and a calibration certificate is issued. Do you stock spare parts for medical sealers?

Yes. We stock complete spares bundles for Audion Magneta and Magvac medical sealers, including seal wire, PTFE strips, silicone pressure pads, and cutting blades. For Hulme Martin medical sealers, we stock replacement heater bar assemblies. Stock items ship fast from our Solihull warehouse. Call 0121 704 0294.
