How mylar seals with an impulse heat sealer

Mylar (metallized PET/foil laminate) has an inner polyethylene layer that fuses under heat. An impulse sealer fires a short, controlled burst to weld that inner layer — creating an oxygen and moisture barrier without degrading the foil outer. The result is a permanent, airtight seal.

The same sealer works across all foil-lined and metallized formats: stand-up pouches, flat heat-seal bags, gusseted bags, and multi-layer laminates. Adjustable sealing time accommodates thicker foil gauges.

Choosing the right seal width for your bag size

Mylar bags vary widely. Match the sealer to the widest opening you'll seal:

  • 300mm — small sample bags and flat pouches up to approximately 280mm wide
  • 400mm — standard quart-size and most retail stand-up pouches; the most commonly ordered size
  • 500mm — large flat storage bags, gallon-size pouches, and wider gusseted formats

The PSH402 (400mm, £108.98) covers the majority of mylar bag formats used in food storage, supplement packaging, and small-batch food production.

What these sealers are used for

Artisan food and drink producers

Coffee roasters, tea packers, spice blenders, and snack brands using foil laminate bags for barrier performance and retail shelf presence. Consistent seals protect aroma, extend shelf life, and look professional at point of sale.

Supplement and health brands

Vitamins, protein powders, herbal blends, and functional foods packed in metallized stand-up pouches. Food-grade seals, consistent results batch after batch — important when margins depend on zero waste.

Contract and co-packers

Businesses sealing foil sachets across multiple client SKUs in the same session. Adjustable sealing time handles different foil gauges without changing machines. Foot-pedal models free both hands and speed up throughput.

Long-term storage and emergency food brands

Dehydrated goods, freeze-dried meals, and bulk grains sealed with oxygen absorbers for 5–25 year shelf life. Mylar's combined oxygen and moisture barrier is the industry standard in the emergency food sector.

Common Questions

Will an impulse sealer create a food-safe seal on mylar bags?

Yes. Impulse sealers melt the inner polyethylene layer of the mylar pouch, creating an airtight hermetic seal. The seal itself never touches the food — it's a heat-fusion of the pouch material. All impulse sealers sold by PackSealer are suitable for food-grade packaging applications.

Which width do I need — 300mm, 400mm, or 500mm?

Choose a sealer at least 20mm wider than your bag opening. The 300mm sealer suits pouches up to 280mm wide — typical for 100–250g bags. The 400mm covers most 250–500g stand-up pouches and is our most popular size. The 500mm handles larger retail bags and bulk pouches. If you regularly seal different bag sizes, size up.

Can I seal mylar bags that already have a zip-lock?

Yes — seal below or above the zip-lock. For long-term storage, apply the seal above the zip-lock for a permanent hermetic closure. For retail resealability, seal above the product fill line and leave the zip-lock accessible. Never seal through the zip-lock itself as this causes an uneven seal.

What if the heating element stops working?

Heating elements are a consumable part — they wear out over time with heavy use. PackSealer stocks replacement elements, PTFE tape, and foam strips for every model we sell. The PSH402 spares kit (£14.99) contains everything you need to rebuild the sealing jaw. Most repairs take under 10 minutes.
